To me, The Weeknd has been a confused character. In the closing track of MDM,he says he will be back to his old ways, and in Heartless he says he is back to his old ways. MDM neatly ties in with his actual break up with selena and his break up with the girl in starboy. In the Penultimate track,Die For You, He confesses that he would die for her and it implied that they do end up together and,"I Feel It Coming" is the weeknd being happy in a long time. He mentions her in Party Monster, he calls her a false alarm, In Reminder,her flexes on her to prove his worth yet in True Colors and Rockin' he tries to get with her. Starboy shows him trying to get a girl who is playing hard to get.
Anyways, you could be right about it being a character and the narrative but it doesn't make the song any less tired and if he was leaning into the narrative hard I think remixing an old song with added/removed verses would be more inspiring than rehashing the same old song template but that's just my opinion. Perhaps he's leading up to that since I've seen some speculating that he might ditch the stage name. If it is a character and not just him then that could even explain the distance in the song but in a way using a character's voice instead of his own is just another tool to avoid being truly vulnerable with his music and maybe is something that he should discard as he grows as an artist. Some of his past songs have been connected and relatable so he isn't incapable either. Idk i'm stretching igAdding a narrative or it being from the perspective of a character instead of the actual singer doesn't change that it's a relatively shallow song that doesn't tap into much of the human experience.
